So I recently made the decision that I wanted to participate in a triathlon this spring. I've always wanted to be a competitive triathlete but was unable to since I was busy training year-round for my universities track and cross country teams. Due to this I never had the time to fully dedicate myself to training for one. But, now that I've graduated and need some motivation in my life I figured there was no better time to begin my Tri career. My brother participates in Tris every year and kinda motivated me to get started and so now it has begun. I am planning on running the Breezy Point Triathlon in Norfolk, Va. . This triathlon is a 1k swim, 20k bike and 5k run.
Since I have a pretty strong running background I am not too worried about the running section. I should be able to easily knock out a 5k with no problem, even after the bike and swim. I am a better swimmer than most triathletes (according to my brother) so I am not too worried about that section either. The bike, on the other hand, is what gets my stomach turning. I have never been big on biking. It is just one of those events that I was never drawn to like I was with swimming and running. I usually see the bike as punishment due to my college running days where I was forced to bike everyday for over an hour when I was injured. That was the worst! I need to overcome this negative stigma against the bike and get to training or else I am going to have a rude awakening come race day.
As far as training goes I plan on running 4-5 days a week, swimming 2-3 days a week and biking 3-4 days a week. I plan on trying to get 2 bricks in a week to make sure my body gets used to transitioning from one event to the next. This week I am just going to build up my cardio/endurance with running and then let the real training begin next week. I realize that I am only giving myself a little over a month to train for my first Tri, which is kind of insane, but I figured I have to start somewhere!
So let the training begin......
